He wakes as the bundle of energy that is his six year old sister lands with a thud on his chest, forcing all the air from his lungs with a pained “oof”.

“Wake up!

She’s bouncing, now. He tries to push her off without opening his eyes, but she’s straddled his torso and doesn’t budge.

Rooooonnn!” she whines.

“What?” he grumbles.

“It snowed!” she squeals, and then she’s gone, racing down the stairs.

The house already smells of fruit mince and turkey, and when he looks out his window the world is dusted and rimed in brightest, purest white.

- Best Drabble

For the impulsiveness of his youth, the foolishness, the self-importance, he has served a lifetime of penance.

Never again, he resolved, and to that he has been true and faithful.

You deserve this, he reminds himself, whenever he would have strayed. That is not for the likes of you.

He throws himself into study and experiments. They allow him to remain clinical and detached and keep his baser passions in check.

He clings to that remoteness like a blanket, as the years pass and his hair turns to spun silver, but he never forgets that he once felt so alive.

Title: Gold

See them together? Aren’t they complementary?

Harry and Hermione have their heads bent close, leaning in towards the portrait.

See how clever they are? The way they bounce ideas back and forth?

They’re both thin with deep shadows under their eyes, but they look more alive than they have in weeks now they have a new lead in their Quest. Harry is pacing, gesticulating in his excitement.

Why are you even here? They don’t need you. They’ve forgotten you even exist.

“Ron? Ron?” Harry suddenly asks.

The evil in the heavy gold locket closes a cold fist around his heart.

Title: Tartan

“Did ye hear what that bird just asked me?” snapped Seamus Finnigan, sitting himself down hard on his bar stool with a huff. “She wanted ter know what part of Scotland I was from!”

Oliver raised an eyebrow. “What did you say?”

“I said, ‘Do you see me wearing any fecking tartan?’ Stupid bint.”

“Someone told me they had a sister living in Dublin yesterday and asked if I knew her. And I was wearing a kilt at the time.”

Seamus shook his head in disgust.

“What’ll it be?” asked the barkeeper.

“Guiness,” said Oliver.

“Scotch for me,” said Seamus.

Title: Brocade
Author: iamshadow
Ship: Gen
Word Count: 100 + title
Rating: G
Warnings: None.
Summary: Written for 2008_drabbles from Table G

The decadence was ornate, but cold. If he had ever been to one, Draco might have compared it to Muggle stately homes that were open to the public.

But here there were no red velvet ropes keeping wandering strangers from the ‘family’ rooms, because Malfoy Manor was his home, the only one he’d ever known.

Speak when you’re spoken to. I have no need for a prattling child that can’t hold its tongue.

Remember your position, Draco. These people look to us to set the example. They are beneath you.

Rich tapestries and stiff brocade, spotlessly polished silverware and silence.

I think I had my angst hat on tonight. Lots of moody drabbles.

*uses most angsty icon*

Oh poor Ron and Dumbledore.

And I love the snow one. :-)

Ickle Ronnniekins and Ickle Ginny!

I was going to have the twins outside pitching snowballs at the window, but I ran out of words.

oh, I love little GInny and Dumbledore with his hair of spun silver. And of all the Ron/Horcrux things I've read, yours really nailed it.

You say so much in so few words. There are all so lovely.

I think Ginny was probably a right brat when it took her fancy, that could get away with murder.

Dumbledore's story is sad...I was thinking about him recently, and this drabble was a good way of getting my thoughts about him down. And you can read this as you wish - requited or unrequited. He just fell for the wrong person and blinded himself.

Glad you liked my Horcrux thing! and the fun thing about it is that it really is Gen. You can read it as canon pairing, Ron/Harry or Trio. The dynamic works for all of them, because essentially it's just Ron feeling inadequate and left out.

White is lovely, I love seeing the relationship between Ron & Ginny, especially when they're younger.

Silver - *hugs Dubmledore tightly*

Gold - *wibbles* I can't read anything to do with that part of the book without getting a little upset!

Tartan - my favourite so far! So, so simple but so clever! Made me laugh a lot!

Brocade - I had no idea what this meant until I used Google. I love the language you've used here!

They're so close in age that they'd have a strong relationship, even if it wasn't amicable all the time. Because the next-in-age are the twins who are closely bonded to each other, I'd imagine ron and Ginny were each other's companions much of the time.

*sighs and pats Dumbledore*

*snuggles you tightly* He comes back, just cling to that!

I loved writing this. It was originally going to be about McGonagall, but I really didn't know how to write the vague idea I had. And then I thought of Shay and Oliver in a pub bitching about getting mistaken for being each others' nationalities, and it wrote itself! You could even take their drink choices as a subtle shipping hint, too. ;)

Thank you! Another one that was going to be something different. This was originally going to be another Grimmauld Place drabble, but it would have been too similar to Black and I really wanted to get as many characters and situations in as I could.

Silver is absolutely beautiful! It's heartbreaking and so very angsty--it fits Dumbledore/Grindelwald perfectly.

And I love Brocade--the descriptions of Malfoy Manor seem so powerful yet untouchable and a cold place for Draco to have grown up in. It's marvellous! ♥

My angst muse came out in full force tonight!

And yes, from the little we see of Malfoy Manor in DH it seems an appallingly bleak place to raise a child. I can't imagine young Draco being allowed to shout and play and leave his toys lying about. I'd imagine he had a nursery suite and a nanny house elf, and his mother would visit him occasionally between social functions and kiss him absently on the cheek.

Loving all of these especially 'Gold' with Ron and the Horcrux.

I'm quite fond of Gold myself, but that said, it and Stone were probably the least original because they just reworked canon scenes.

Hee! Ickle!Ron and Ginny! So sweet.

Gold - ouch. Oh, Ronnie. *hugs*

Hahahhaah, I love Seamus and Oliver! (How early is too early in the day pour myself one of thos? *checks clock* *doesn't care*)

Brocade is quite chilling.

Very nice!

Tartan and Brocade I was pleqasantly surprised by, because neither were ones I had real bunnies for before I wrote them.

I particular, Tartan really thrilled me. So many of these turned out angsty, and to be able to work in some crack was wonderful.

Plus, the idea of those two accents in such close proximity...GUH!
star54kar From: star54kar Date: January 7th, 2008 03:48 am (UTC) (Link)
These are all amazing, but Tartan was especially funny!

I wonder if they'll ever figure out that the nationality confusion is being generated by their bar tabs:P
shadowfiction From: shadowfiction Date: January 9th, 2008 08:23 am (UTC) (Link)
Just like South Africans, Kiwis and Aussies, and Americans and Canadians, the Scots and the Irish are forever doomed to be mistaken for each other by those who aren't 'tuned in' to their accents.

Putting the drinks' order in was fun, though, just to turn things on their head at the end. :)

Silver is perfect.

That's it exactly.
